Literature Text

(Concerning the set: the set is designed with a front imitating the inside of a underground train, there shall only be two seats which are side on to the window facing towards the implied direction of travel, there is one large window between that and the conveyor belt rig which shall be hidden at first by a black screen (imitating the train travelling through a tunnel), the conveyor belt shall decrease in speed and come to a stop to imitate the train arriving at the platform the background of the station is also on a moving screen matching the speed of the conveyor belt. While the background is at a high speed, the passengers waiting will be part of the background screen, only when the conveyor has reached a safe slow speed shall the cast members stand on it.)

(Scene opens with Sally sat at the window seat of the train, stage lighting is focused on the window and seats, behind the train set there is a medium lighting hidden behind the screen. Sally keeps an idol glance out the window).

(SFX: Ding Dong)

Announcer: The next station is Farringdon, please mind the gap between the train and the platform edge.

(Lighting changes to a series of multiple moving colours, with one light still focused on Sally. Music of the opening of a game show begins to play.)

Game Show Host Voice (GSH): (Encouraging tone as if opening a game show) It’s the Monday commute, the train is full save for one seat... Sally Mackintosh, let’s play Trrrrrain Trrrravel Rooooooouleeeeeette!

(Lights continue to move and music changes into a theme tune, after the music has played the sound of a single drum booms followed by tense game show music and lighting once again changes to focus on the train set.)

(SFX: Ding Dong)

Announcer: This is Farringdon, change here for Hammersmith and City, Circle and National Rail services.

(Screen is removed and the background and conveyor belt begin to slow.)

(Sally is to watch the other cast members pass by, but not react to the GSH’s following line.)

GSH: Let’s see who will be sitting next to you. (Once the conveyor belt is at a safe speed) Will it be... (Man in suit (passes by on conveyor belt)) the average commuter, (Fat man in suit) the rude and neck-less investment banker, (beautiful woman) the hot blonde, (handsome man A) the boy who looks like a movie star, (man with tattoos on face) the scary tattooed nut, (goth) the creepy goth, (man in suit) another normal commuter, (handsome man B) the man you can’t help but look at and admire, (woman with pram) the screaming baby, (man in hoodie) the man who looks like he has a knife, (artsy man) the pretentious weirdo, (snotty looking man) the man who keeps staring at your breasts, (man in suit) yet another normal commuter? (conveyor belt stops at old looking man in anorak) Congratulations! You have won the rude old man!

(Lighting moves to the door of the train as the man walks to them, as they open SFX plays the sound of applause and he waves excitedly at the audience before making his way to the seat by Sally.)

Old Man: (Looking at Sally with discontent) Not you again! For god sake! Give me space! (Facing out to “another passenger”) Turn those headphones off! God, it’s like a game of roulette sometimes (he sits down beside an uncomfortable looking Sally.)

(Scene!
This is a sketch based on the daily commute that many people (including myself) take part in, sometimes you see people who look... Odd. And it occurred to me that sometimes, when you're in the underground, and facing out towards the platform and watching the commuters waiting for the train to stop, and you are next to the only available seat on the train, you sometime find yourself playing a game of... Well you get it, enjoy!

Hahaha! I liked this one. Wonderfully simple twist!
